Disorders of the cardiopulmonary system are common in adults, especially older adults. Physical therapists participate in the care of patients with cardiopulmonary disorders.

Because the primary function of the cardiopulmonary system is to deliver oxygen to active tissues, the cardiopulmonary system plays an important part in movement. In the presence of disease or abnormality, the cardiopulmonary system often is the limiting factor to performing functional activities. Physical therapists are responsible for providing education on the prevention of cardiopulmonary diseases and for managing patients with both primary and secondary diagnoses involving the cardiopulmonary system.
