“Being active is being alive”, this is our philosophy in Al Tamayuz

Physiotherapy Center. An avid runner whose pain has stopped his passion, a weight lifter with no wings to enjoy the adrenalin rush due to pain, a football player with an injured knee-all no longer alive when their pain limits them; This is where sports physical therapists come. We live and breathe the passion to move and help those in love with sport to live their passion and dreams pain free. What do we do as sports physical therapy specialists?

-We assess injuries to know the exact reason of injury. In sports injuries, there is usually a hidden cause behind the injury.

-Manage pain, loss of movement and weakness caused by the injury

-Return the athlete to maximal sport performance

-Assess the healthy athletes for risks of injuries and teach them how to prevent injuries and keep and improve their performance.

If you are an athlete and hungry for optimal performance, call us now to start a journey that will lead you right to the winner’s circle.

What is sports rehabilitation?

It is a science that deals with injured athletes to help gain full function, return to sport and prevent further injuries. It also involves helping and managing injured athletes on the field, referring to appropriate health professionals when mandated and working hand in hand with appropriate health professionals to walk injured athletes to the safe land. Sports rehabilitation and sports medicine have developed in such a way that true sport rehabilitation professionals can predict some sports injuries reliably before they happen. A sport rehabilitation practitioner should possess the proper knowledge in basic medical sciences, biomechanics, exercise physiology, first aid skills, injury prevention, and evidence- based medicine. A sport rehabilitation practitioner should possess full knowledge of the sport his athlete is involved in to establish a solid treatment plan tailored specifically for the athlete.

Swelling, pain and loss of motion are common complaints following a sports injury. In order to regain post-injury levels, movement is extremely important. The experts in body movements are physical therapists who are trained to conduct specific exercises and stretches meant for aiding recovery to a specific part of the body. So,

what are some reasons why physical therapy is important to a sports injury recovery?

1-Identification of deficiencies

Physical therapists are the ones who conduct each physical therapy session and they are trained to indentify deficiencies in the biomechanics of our body. Just by looking at how to body work will help them to know which part needs help. Therapists are also able to prescribe exercises which are helpful post surgery and help to ensure a fast recovery.

2- Increase range of motion

Post injury or surgery, the range of motion in that particular joint is extremely limited due to swelling and scarring. There will also be severe pain and the lack of ability to fully use the joint. As a result, exercises are required to be performed in order to overcome it. Physical therapy will help by ensuring a gradual increase in the intensity of exercises, helping to move your joints as much as possible without increasing much pain. It also helps to restore joint movements and strengthen the surrounding muscles.

3- Inhibit scar tissues formation

One of the side effects post surgery is the formation of scar tissues. However, scar tissues are undesirable due to various reasons such as cosmetic appearances, impediment of motion and as a source of discomfort. This can cause women to feel inferior and lose self confidence. Scar tissues are usually darker in color and their sizes depend on the depth of the wound. Also, scar tissues are thicker and harder than normal tissues a. Being thicker and harder, it also presses down on other tissues. Physical therapy starts early and this helps to reduce and inhibit the formation of scar tissues, lessening the chances of those effects mentioned above.

.Physical therapy is an important part of the healing process. It actually starts before surgery and lasts all the way until around a year later. It helps to strengthen the muscles around the injury to help better support it and regain the range of motion after surgery.

Common Sports injuries

Sports injuries are common injuries for athletes and they can affect every

part of our musculoskeletal system. There are hundreds of sports injuries

out there and some can have a serious impact on the future of the athlete’s

career. Read on to find out which injuries are the most common ones
suffered.

Bottom of Form

Sprained Ankle

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a sprained ankle it is advisable to get it assessed and treated as soon as possible. If there is significant pain and you are struggling to walk on the leg, you may require an x-ray, to help rule out any damage to the bone.

Often, the injury occurs to the ligament on the outside

of the ankle, known as the ATFL. Initially RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) treatment is recommended to help reduce the swelling. Physiotherapy treatment may be required to help reduce the swelling further, using ultrasound and soft tissue massage. We normally help to maintain and

restore movement in the joint through exercises and mobilizations. You will follow a set rehabilitation program designed specifically for you, to help restore your full function, balance, strength and movement, and get you back playing as soon as possible

Fractured Metatarsal

Metatarsal fractures are the most common traumatic foot injuries. Broken Metatarsals have plagued several high profile footballers. The recent change in football boots (becoming lighter and more flexible) has often been cited as the potential reason for this increase.

Groin strains

Groin strains occur when the adductor muscles located at the upper thigh is pulled and strained. It often happens when a sudden change in direction is attempted and the muscles have no time to respond, resulting in them being pulled. This is most common in high speed sports such as soccer, rugby, basketball and volleyball.

Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles Tendinitis is an injury that occurs when the Achilles tendon which is located at the back of the ankle is overused. It occurs commonly in athletes who are involved in sporting activities that requires them to jump, hop or run for prolonged periods of time such as soccer, running and long jumping. Chronic Achilles Tendinitis can result in inflammation and serious pain which will result in the inability to run.

Concussion

Concussion happens when there is a direct impact to the head. This is most common in high impact sports such as rugby and soccer. Concussion will result in vision disturbance and disorientation. In serious cases, they can be unconscious Recovery period of mild cases of concussion is often fast while serious cases can cause possible permanent damages.

Shoulder injuries

Shoulder injuries include shoulder sprains, strains and dislocations. This is often seen in sports which require extensive usage of the shoulder such as swimming, badminton, volleyball and tennis. Due to overuse, the shoulder joint which is essentially a ball and socket joint becomes loose, resulting in the rotator cuff loosening. When this happens, it becomes weak and is prone to injuries and dislocations.

Ligaments injury

Ligaments are fibrous tissues which connects our bones to other bones. They also help to support the joints and allow a normal range of motion for the joints. Ligaments have high tensile strength due to the high density of collagen present. Ligaments also provide proprioceptive inputs to the brain and allow the body to perform complex activities required in sports. Injuries to the ligament are common in high impact and high speed sports and a structural damage to the ligaments are known as ligament sprains. There are some ligament injuries that are much more common than others and let’s take a look at them.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are common is high impact sports like football, soccer, rugby and basketball. The ACL is one of the 4 main ligaments in the knee which joins the femur to the tibia. Nearly 50% of patients who experience ACL injuries suffer it in combination with injuries to other parts of the knee such as the meniscus and medial collateral ligament. ACL injuries occur most commonly from sudden twisting motion

change direction, causing the ACL to rupture. An ACL reconstruction will be the most viable option after injury as ligaments cannot heal by themselves.

Medial Collateral Ligament The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is another main ligament of the knee which provides stability to the knee. The MCL is located from the end of the femur to the top of the tibia and it prevents the knee from opening up. Due to its preventive features, it is commonly injured when there is an impact on the outside of the knee joint which causes the knee to buckle and the knee to open up. MCL injuries are also mostly in conjunction with ACL and meniscus injuries. If it is a standalone MCL injury, surgery is often not required and patients can get on with their lives pretty well with the help of a knee brace to provide stability.
